To update your computer to the most recent operating system, follow the instructions below based on which operating system you are running. Periodically, updates will be pushed out to devices from the tech department and may need manual user intervention to complete the update.
Windows:
- Log in to your computer and get to the desktop
- Click the Windows logo in the bottom-left side of the screen
- Begin typing "Settings" and click the settings app once it appears in the search list
- Click on "Updates and Security" (Windows 10) or "Windows Updates" (Windows 11)
- Click the check for updates button or install updates button on that page
- Once updates are installed, Windows will prompt you to restart your machine, you can schedule your machine to restart outside of active hours so it will not interfere with your workday
ChromeOS
1. Sign in to your Chromebook
Ensure you are signed in to your Chromebook using your Google account.
2. Open the Settings Menu
Once signed in, click on the Time or Battery Icon in the bottom-right corner of the screen to open the status tray.
In the status tray, click on the Settings gear icon.
3. Navigate to "About Chrome OS"
In the Settings window, scroll down on the left-hand side and select "About Chrome OS" from the menu at the bottom.
4. Check for Updates
In the "About Chrome OS" section, you will see information about your Chromebook’s current version.
Click on the "Check for updates" button. Your Chromebook will start checking for the latest updates.
5. Install Updates
If an update is available, it will start downloading automatically.
Once the update is downloaded, you will be prompted to restart your Chromebook to complete the installation.
Click "Restart" to finish the update.
6. Verify the Update
After restarting, you can go back to the "About Chrome OS" section to verify that your Chromebook is now running the latest version.
